Have you ever used a car breaking yard before? If you have ever sold a car for scrap it’s likely it would have ended up being dismantled in a breaking yard, with separate parts being removed for use in other cars, or sold on to those who require additional parts.

As the UK’s largest independent Mercedes-Benz specialists, we are responsible for servicing, repairing and scrapping vehicles, as well as supplying a huge range of vehicle parts for current owners wanting to upgrade existing vehicles. Our breaking yard is a big part of where we work on cars that come into us, and is vital to our ongoing operations.

What is a Car Breaking Yard?

If you haven’t heard of a car breaking yard, you will probably have heard it go by a different name. They can sometimes come under the umbrella term of ‘scrap yard’ in the UK, although the difference is that breaking yards are responsible for breaking down scrapped cars and stripping them for parts rather than simply storing unwanted vehicles.

In the US or Canada it might be known as a wrecking yard, junkyard or salvage yard, but essentially it is the same premise. Cars meant for scrap are delivered, before they are stripped down to remove any valuable parts that can be repurposed into new vehicles or sold.

How are vehicles processed in a Breaking Yard?

Vehicles that are passed onto Dronsfields have usually suffered damage, or are being brought in to be scrapped if they have broken down or have come to the end of their life. The process then begins of ‘breaking’ the car, which put simply is stripping it down completely, salvaging all the valuable parts.

Chances are that even if one major part of the car has failed, there will be other parts that will be perfectly usable, so destroying the entire vehicle would just be a waste. Therefore, once the car has had all valuable parts removed, it is stripped down to the bare chassis, before being crushed. This crushed steel can then be recycled or exported overseas to regions such as Asia where steel is in demand.

What parts do we salvage?

There is a huge range of parts that can be salvaged from cars, not least the engine and battery if they are still in working order. Given that vehicles are made up of so many complex parts, many of which will still be in working order, they all hold a certain value, especially for those looking to upgrade existing vehicles or purchase replacement parts for their same model of car.

The parts salvaged during breaking include:

– Braking System
– Cooling System
– Engine
– Battery
– Exhaust
– Doors & Door Components
– Lights
– Rims & Tyres
– Steering
– Suspension
– Wipers

All of our parts come with a brand new warranty and have all been vetted to ensure they are fully-functioning and are ready for further use on another vehicle.
