You’ve probably seen in the news over the last few years that diesel vehicles are terrible for the environment, but there’s hope on the horizon. Mercedes Benz has released a solution called AdBlue®, which makes diesel vehicles cleaner on the environment with little to no impact on performance.
What is AdBlue®?
AdBlue® is a clear, odorless liquid that’s made from urea and demineralised water. It’s non-toxic and non-flammable.
How does it work?
AdBlue® is fed into the exhaust, which enables it to react with the nitrogen oxide gas that’s produced by the combustion process. This breaks the nitrogen oxide into nitrogen and oxygen – which is harmless to the environment.
When the AdBlue® reaches exceptionally high temperatures (say you’re driving at a high speed for a long period of time), it will turn into ammonia. This will then break down the nitrogen oxide and reduce the volume of particles being emitted into the atmosphere.
Will my car come with AdBlue® already installed?
If you own a newer diesel Mercedes Benz, it will most likely already come with AdBlue® technology already installed. If you’re unsure, take a look into your car’s handbook to check.
When do I need to top up?
AdBlue® has been created to run for several thousand miles before needing a refuel. However, a warning light will appear in the instrument cluster if you need a top up. If you choose to ignore this warning light, eventually a message will come up indicating the amount of miles you have left before you run out of AdBlue® altogether.
Do I need to top up the AdBlue® – can’t it just run on diesel alone?
Yes, you will need to top up the AdBlue®. Failure to do so will result in the ignition failing to start once it has been switched off.
How do I top up AdBlue®?
To top up, purchase the AdBlue® fluid from any Mercedes Benz retailer and they will top up your car free of charge.
