If you’re looking to sell your used car, there are a range of ways to do this. Which route you choose to go down depends on how much time you have spare, whether or not you need to sell it urgently, and how much you want to sell it for.

If your car isn’t in working order, we can scrap it for you.

Selling privately

If you want to get the best price for your used car, you’re probably better off selling it privately. This means you’ll have full control over how much you choose to sell your car for, and you’ll be able to judge prospective buyers for yourself.

If you choose to sell privately, you’ll have to advertise the car yourself. It’s pretty easy to do this, and there are a range of websites out there that you can use. Some, like Gumtree, are free to use. However, this means that your contact details will be on display to whoever comes across the ad, and some sellers have even received nuisance phone calls and emails because of this.

Using a paid site like Autotrader means you’ll be able to keep your details protected. It is more expensive to use than other sites, but attracts over three times the number of visitors than its nearest competitor.

If you choose to sell privately, you’ll need to organise meeting and arranging viewings with potential buyers yourself, and it could take a while to sell your vehicle. Another negative aspect of selling your car privately is you could come across time wasters. However, many people choose this method to sell, as you’re likely to get the highest price.

To a main dealer

An easy, but not necessarily financially beneficial, way to sell your car is by selling it back to the main dealer. This doesn’t have to be the exact same car showroom that you bought the car from originally.

Once you’ve visited the dealership, they will value your car and make an offer, whether you choose to accept this is up to you. If you accept, you can leave with your money in next to no time at all. However, if your car doesn’t work anymore, the dealership will most likely not want it. You also most likely won’t get as much for your car, compared with how much you could sell it for privately.

To WeBuyAnyCar

Websites that will buy any car, whether it’s in working order or not, are an easy and relatively hassle-free way to sell your used car. To use websites like these, all you have to do is enter your details, and information about your car, online and you’ll get a quote. You can then take the car to your local centre and they will complete the transaction and take the car. If your car isn’t in working order, they will come and collect it from your home.

Whilst using websites like WeBuyAnyCar might be easier than selling your car privately, you won’t necessarily get the best price. It’s also worth keeping in mind that the quote you get online isn’t necessarily set in stone, and the price could change once they have seen your vehicle.

To a local used car dealer

Another way you could sell your old car is buying going to a used car dealer. Most local garages will give you a quote if you just show up and let them have a look at your car. This is particularly useful if you’re selling your car via part-exchange policy in which you’re looking for a trade.

Deals can be done very quickly, however you will most likely get a better price for your car if you choose to sell privately.
