This month, Mercedes Benz have announced their brand new headlight technology that’s sure to be yet another milestone in the motor vehicle industry. This new ‘digital light’ is designed to illuminate certain road symbols onto the road, making them much easier to see at night.

How does it work?

The new headlights use camera and radar sensors to identify other road users and distribute adapted light distribution to the area in front of the vehicle. Why do they need to identify other road users? They’ll automatically reduce the amount of light they give off into the environment, to avoid dazzling other road users.

Nighttime driving can be dangerous, due to decreased vision. That’s one of the reasons that Mercedes have worked tirelessly to create headlines that will give the driver optimum vision, but without the glare that can distort how much the driver can see. The goal here is to optimise driver safety at night, and with various functions that will greatly support the driver, this is a huge step towards safer roads across the globe.

Say goodbye to dark zones at roundabouts

Another innovation that comes with Mercedes’ new light technology is the cornering light function which effectively allows the driver to ‘see’ around corners and makes it possible for the driver to have visibility over the road in poor light driving conditions. Wide-ranging illumination of the roundabout allows the driver to see possible hazards that lay in wait such as pedestrian crossings, cyclists and other road users before dangers can arise.

Anti-dazzle Technology

Mercedes’ new light technology enables new levels of safety lighting on UK roads with the installation of multibeam LED technology. Combined with sensory technology, LEDs provide the lighting needed for the roads in poor light but also excluding oncoming vehicles so that dazzling is simply not an option for new generation Mercedes vehicles. High beam can also be a burden when driving at night, however, new Mercedes vehicles, allow for the permanent enablement of the high beam light function without imposing on other road users and impairing their ability to drive safely.
