The next generation of Mercedes Benz CLS is due to be released in Spring 2018, and is said to be the smartest coupe yet. The car was first revealed at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show last week, and has a variety of driver assist features, including:

  • Traffic monitoring – wired up to the SatNav to give a more accurate picture of the roads around you.
  • Car-to-X technology – monitors the activity of other vehicles.
  • Office function – to dial into those all important conference calls automatically.

The interior

The interior takes a lot of inspiration from the existing Mercedes E Class, and boasts two wide-screen displays. These stretch from in front of the driver, to the centre of the dashboard.

The new CLS will have five seats. If you want to increase the capacity of the 520 litre boot, the rear seats fold individually.

Engines and Fuel economy

There are two types of engines available – two diesel and one petrol – and each one is a 3.0 litre straight six blocks, featuring automatic transmissions. The petrol engine is the fastest of the three, with a 4.8 second 0-62 mph acceleration time. It’s claimed that the fuel economy is 38 mpg, with the CO2 figure standing at 178g/km.

The diesel engines are said to have a fuel economy of 50mpg, with CO2 emissions of 148g/km.

Whilst optional features include air suspension, the new CLS will include the following features as standard:

  • LED headlamps
  • 18 inch alloy wheels
  • Interior ambient lighting system
  • On-board internet connectivity
  • Massaging seats
  • Cabin fragrances
  • Nighttime mood lighting

Prices for the new CLS are expected to start at around £57,000.
