We’ve all woken up on a cold morning, ready to start our commute to work, only to realise that the car windscreen is completely covered in ice. For the majority of drivers in the UK, this is one of the early indications of winter.

As many will know, the rules completely change when it comes to driving your Mercedes-Benz during the colder months, be it a SLK, A-Class or Sprinter van etc. The traffic seems to double overnight and the roads can be hazardous.

Colder weather, twinned with poor driving conditions, can have costly consequences unless you take the relevant steps to look after your vehicle. Don’t get caught out. Read our informative guide and top winter tips on caring for your car in the cold…

Top-up on anti-freeze

It seems like such an obvious suggestion, but you’ll be surprised to hear of the amount of people who forget to check their anti-freeze levels.

You should consult your manual on the correct ratio of anti-freeze and always ensure that you are at the recommend level, which will be marked on your tank. Having too little, or no anti-freeze, could have devastating effects on your engine during the cold months.

Check your tyres and tyre pressures

It’s certainly advisable to switch from summer to winter tyres, which are built for withstanding colder temperatures. The increased traction and tread you get with winter tyres can really make the difference when driving in the snow or on ice.

If you’re confident you have the right tyres for the job, your next focus should be on the actual tyre pressures. Again, your manual will instruct you on the correct PSI and bar levels. These will depend on your Mercedes’ year and model.

Cold starts

Those with an older car, take note. Leaving your engine to warm up for a few moments before driving off is vital in the winter, especially during those chilly early mornings. You could use this time to clear your windscreen of ice or snow.

Is it time for a service?

Can you remember the last time you took your vehicle for a full service? Regular services are essential to the upkeep of any car, not just Mercedes vehicles. Your manual will outline how often to get your car or van serviced.

A full vehicle check, before or during the winter, is strongly advised and could save your forking out for repairs if your car was to break down. Dronsfields provide Mercedes approved servicing, from brake checks to oil changes.

Plan your route in advance

Adverse weather conditions can often mean accidents, road closures and delays. The AA’s route planning service could save you a lengthy journey. Give it a go here.

Check your windscreen wipers are working

Who knows what the weather will do this winter, we often have to prepare ourselves for absolutely anything. Give your windscreen wipers a good test as soon as you have the chance. You never know, they may need replacing.

Make sure your lights are in full working order

Making sure your headlights are in full working order is a must during the winter months. The days are shorter and visibility is often very poor. Check your front headlights, your indicators, internal lights and headlights. Your bulbs may need changing if you notice any faults.

Invest in a winter driving kit

A winter driving kit is essential and could save you in your time of need. We recommend keeping the following items in your car over the next few months:

–       A snow shovel

–       Blankets

–       Warm clothes

–       A hi-visibility jacket

–       De-icer

–       A foil blanket

–       Tow rope

–       A first aid kit

–       Water bottles

–       A supply of emergency

–       Torch

–       A portable battery
